Not Apple, Amazon, Google or Microsoft: you’ve never heard of the most valuable company in the world

Hearing the name of the most valuable company in the world will likely be met with the question: what do they do?

Apple is no longer the world’s most valuable company, having been usurped by a name that is not commonly known to the average homo sapien on the street.

For years, Apple, Microsoft, Google and Amazon have battled hard to claim the top spot in the rich list, with share prices peaking and dipping in the constant commitment to be the best and have the biggest pockets.

However, there’s a new kid on the block. They’ve shot out of the blue with a new tech buzzword and rapidly made their way to the summit of the tree that presides over the walled garden of the richest names on the planet.

NVIDIA is, at the time of writing, the most valuable company in the world. Before the turn of the year the company shot up 15% in just 19 days, putting up numbers for the fourth quarter of 2024 that blew minds across the tech and business world: 15.17% YoY and 15.02% QoQ.

How much is Nvidia worth?

The most widely owned stock by active fund managers in the US, the company is expected to continue their rise.

Now, in mid-January, it has pipped Tim Cook’s baby to number one with a valuation of $3.456 trillion. Apple sits in the silver medal spot with a measly $3.329 trillion, a whole one-hundred and twenty seven billion dollars difference.

Set up in 1993 by Jensen Huang (president and CEO), Chris Malachowsky, and Curtis Priem, NVIDIA say they they are the world leaders in AI computing and "provide end-to-end solutions to develop and deploy AI-powered autonomous machines and edge computing applications". Dig through the David Brent gubbins on the website and you’ll eventually find out that they “engineer the most advanced chips, systems, and software for the AI factories of the future.”

It is whispered that big companies such as Amazon, Meta, Tesla and OpenAI are all customers of NVIDIA, who seem to have their hand in a lot of AI pies and are clearly making waves when it comes to their advanced GPUs; their the newest creation, Blackwell GPUs, expected to bring in $200 billion in sales. Apple, however, have steered well clear of NVIDIA and are said to be making their own chips, Broadcom, which could be released in 2026.
