“Not in Italy or Europe”: an Italian declares which Roman colosseum is the best preserved in the world
An Italian travel expert has lauded a colosseum in North Africa that’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site but remains relatively unknown.

While Rome’s Colosseum may be Italy’s most iconic monument, the best-preserved Roman amphitheater isn’t in Europe - it’s in the Tunisian city of El Jem. According to travel enthusiast @diegosworld, this awe-inspiring archaeological site in North Africa stands as a remarkable testament to the engineering prowess and grandeur of the Roman Empire. Through his Instagram account, he brings visibility to this lesser-known marvel.
Built to survive the passing centuries
Built in the 3rd century AD, the El Jem amphitheater was part of the ancient city of Thysdrus, a thriving commercial hub closely tied to olive oil production. With a capacity of 35,000 spectators, it once hosted gladiator battles and public spectacles that showcased the wealth of the region and its deep connection to Rome.
El Jem’s extraordinary state of preservation truly sets it apart. The exterior structure remains intact, and visitors are free to explore the stands, corridors, and underground chambers at their own pace. Unlike the Colosseum in Rome, there’s no need for a guide, admission is affordable, and long lines are virtually nonexistent - making for a peaceful, self-guided experience.
Another striking feature of El Jem is its construction: entirely built from carved stone without deep foundations. This architectural choice has helped the amphitheater withstand centuries of earthquakes and conflict. During the Middle Ages, parts of the structure were repurposed as a refuge and fortress, further contributing to its preservation.
A lesser-known UNESCO site
Despite its historical significance, El Jem remains relatively under the radar. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979, it offers visitors a truly unique experience. Bathed in desert light and surrounded by serene landscapes, the site invites you to imagine life in ancient Rome - far from the crowds, yet close to the heart of history.
