Not just $1,400 IRS stimulus checks: these states are paying as much as $725 in tax relief
Besides the IRS sending out the remaining stimulus payments there are a couple states where certain residents will see some extra money this year.

Americans across the nation are still grappling with elevated prices four years after disruptions from the covid-19 pandemic caused inflation to surge. The federal government at the time stepped up to help alleviate some of the financial hardship that families in the United States were confronting.
Three rounds of Economic Impact Payments, better known as stimulus checks, were sent out to tens of millions of households. Some states as well stepped up at the time providing tax rebates to help families buffer the economic headwinds.
While most of those programs have ended, there is still some financial help going out to certain American families from their state or local government as well as the IRS to those who still haven’t received their third stimulus check. Here’s a look at some of those programs and proposals.
New York may send $300 to $500 to certain residents
New York Governor Kathy Hochul has proposed a program in her 2025 State of the State that would give rebate checks to around 8.6 million taxpayers. The refund will benefit New Yorkers who recently filed tax returns.
“Because of inflation, New York has generated unprecedented revenues through the sales tax,” Hochul in a statement. “Now, we’re returning that cash back to middle class families.”
Those who are single, head of household, or married filing separately, would be eligible to receive a one-time payment of $300 if their income was no greater than $150,000 per year. New York couples filing jointly would be qualified to receive a one-time payment of $500 if their income was no more than $300,000 per year.
California: Sacramento Family First program sends $725 checks
Beginning on December 15, 2024, the Sacramento Family First program began sending 200 selected households monthly $725 payments. Those payments from the pilot program to help ease financial burden will continue until November 15, 2025.
Alaska accepting applications for 2025 Permanent Fund dividend payment
Oil was discovered in Alaska ten years after it achieved statehood. Residents voted to create the Alaska Permanent Fund to ensure that the “non-renewable resource would provide benefits to current and future generations.” Part of that is the Permanent Fund dividend paid out to residents annually.
While Governor Mike Dunleavy has proposed paying each Alaskan $3,900 in his budget proposal for 2025, it is more likely to be around $1,400 once negotiations with the Legislature are finalized according to Alaska Public Media. Nevertheless, Alaskans can currently apply for their 2025 PFD until March 31, 2025.
IRS sending last of $1,400 stimulus checks
The IRS announced in December that after reviewing its records it had found a million taxpayers who failed to claim their third stimulus check which was for up to $1,400 for every eligible man, woman and child. While most stimulus payments were sent out automatically, eligible taxpayers who didn’t receive one could claim the payment through the Recovery Rebate Credit when they filed a 2021 tax return.
The IRS is saving those who were eligible and left that data field empty or marked $0 for the credit the trouble of amending their 2021 tax return and is sending them the payment they are due automatically. Those payments should arrive by the end of the month.
Those who didn’t file a 2021 tax return and are eligible to claim the Recovery Rebate Credit for up to $1,400 still have time, but not much. The deadline to file and claim the credit, any others and a tax refund for that fiscal year, have until April, 15, 2025.
