Nutritionist to the stars Dr. Philip Goglia explains ‘food jail’ and how he helps celebrities lose weight fast
The founder of one of the most elite nutrition and wellness clinics in the U.S. is the go-to for Hollywood stars who need to get in shape fast.

One of the defining features of Hollywood are its attractive and glamorous film stars. But even they, just like everyone else, have difficulty keeping in shape. That’s where people like Dr. Philip Goglia, a certified nutritionist, come into play.
Stars who need to get buffed up for superhero roles, simply maintain their body weight, or shave off several pounds quickly before they hit the red carpet seek out his help. In the case of the latter, the founder of Performance Fitness Concepts, one of the most elite nutrition and wellness clinics in the U.S., coined the term ‘food jail’ several years ago to describe the process.
He explained the concept a few years back in a video posted on social media. “It used to be a bunch of tuna and a ton of tomato to the point of where you’d be blending up cans of tuna and drinking them as a body builder,” Dr. Goglia says.

The nutritionist to the stars broke down his short-term food jail diet routine as follows. It consists of a whey protein shake or perhaps jam and almond butter in the morning. Then you do a workout followed by a whey protein shake and a tomato for a mid-morning snack.
Your meal at lunch will include a chicken breast and a lot of vegetables as well as a tomato. Then in the afternoon you get two snacks, the first one is a tomato, as well as the second one, but this time with an egg too.
Dr. Goglia describes dinner as “Nemo and his family,” basically fatty fish along with veggies and a tomato. These fatty fish include “salmon, sea bass, black cod, arctic char.” He says that you should always eat more fish for dinner than for lunch.
Rounding off the day, he says you should eat a fruit snack, which doesn’t have to include a tomato, in order to “spike insulin to drop you so you sleep deep and release more growth hormone.”
You may be wondering, “why so many tomatoes?” He explains that it is “for the lycopene content, fat transport and such.”
He also recommends eating Persian cucumbers without the skin, which also contain lycopene but in much smaller amount. The main reason being though that in order to digest the fruit it requires almost more calories than are in the cucumber themselves.
There is one more part to food jail which he shared with ET, Preparation H. “It’s a body builder trick,” Goglia explained. ”It’s a shrinker… a little under your eyes, a little under your abs.” The nutritionist also has his clients in food jail take a salt bath which helps suck out water.
