Real ID: The new document that will be required for traveling in the US and how to request it
Starting May 7, 2025, American travelers will have to have a new document to travel domestically: the Real ID. Here how to request it.
It’s crucial to note that starting May 7, 2025, US travelers must present a “Real ID” to travel within the territory and enter certain federal facilities. These IDs have more security features than those that have been traditionally issued in US states. While, we are still more a year out from this rule going into effect, it could require you to take steps that if delayed until the final moment, could leave you with an ID that will limit your ability to move throughout the country.
Some states began issuing “Real IDs” in 2017 since the initial plan was to require them federally in 2021. However, with the obvious complications created by the COVID-19 pandemic, the deadline was moved to 2025.
What is Real ID?
The Real ID Act, a significant step by the US government, aims to elevate security standards when issuing an identification or license. This new requirement, the Real ID, is designed to facilitate your travel within the national territory and access to government buildings, military installations, and nuclear plants. Remember, you must have a Real ID by May 7, 2025, to engage in any of these activities.
How to request Real ID?
Before taking any initial steps to obtain a REAL ID, check if your driver’s license or state ID has a star in the upper right corner. If so, you do not need to follow any procedure. Well, in the eyes of the government, your ID is already a Real ID.
If you find that your identification or driver’s card doesn’t have the star, don’t worry. The process to obtain a Real ID is straightforward. Simply renew your identification or driver’s card and select the option to make it a Real ID. This ensures your new identification meets the requirements of the law. For detailed instructions, visit your state’s Department of Motor Vehicles website. Please note, the procedure is conducted in person.
It’s important to remember that when updating your data, you’ll need to provide a series of documents to verify your identity. These may include proof of Social Security or another form of current identification. Additionally, you’ll be asked to provide proof of address, which can range from a utility bill to an account statement. Having these documents ready will ensure a smooth process.
