The New York City civil service exam application period opened on March 5 and will remain open through March 25 (with the exception of Water Use Inspector, which is open through July 30). Starting salaries varying depending on the position. The jobs for which exams are currently open are these.

Administrative Public Information Specialist

Deadline: March 25

Salary: Salary is dependent on the level of responsibility of the assignment. For managerial assignments, salaries will follow the Managerial Pay Plan. For non-managerial assignments, they will follow the collective bargaining pay plan.

Job description: Administrative Public Information Specialists under administrative direction with wide latitude for independent initiative and judgment, act as public information representatives for several Mayoral agencies not staffed with public affairs or public information personnel; or as director of information activities for an agency with a major public information staff; or may be responsible for all or a large significant and complex segment of the public infomation activities in a major agency.

Assistant Architect

Deadline: March 25

Salary: $64,242

Job description: Assistant Architects under supervision, perform architectural work of moderate difficulty and responsibility and may supervise subordinate employees. They supervise a small squad, unit or group engaged in the performance of work in architectural design, construction supervision, inspection and testing, or tracing and drafting; engage in research, investigations, studies or examinations related to the architectural functions and activities of a department or agency; prepare, develop and/or review drawings, maps, plans and interpretive detail sketches or layouts, using various methods and technologies, related to architectural plans for the construction, remodeling or repair of public works, structures or installations; among other responsibilities.

Associate Chemist

Deadline: March 25

Salary: $50,865

Job description: Associate Chemists, under various degrees of supervision, perform professional chemistry and related environmental science work, in the lab and in the field, utilizing manual, automated, and computerized instruments and observation. Participate in required proficiency testing; follow quality control and standard operating procedures; and follow safety and health procedures, such as: chemical hygiene, infection control, and blood?borne pathogen exposure plans. May respond to chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear (CBRN) and hazardous materials (HazMat) incidents and perform site evaluations. There are four Assignment Levels within this class of positions.

Cement Mason

Salary: $55.90 per hour for a 35-hour work week

Job description: Cement Masons, under direction, prepare, mix, lay and finish cement and concrete to grade and contour; prepare and set forms; lay concrete floors, pavements, walks, foundations and retaining walls (plain and reinforced); screed and finish cement and/or concrete to grade; prepare material requisitions to meet job requirements; operate small power equipment and tools; keep records; may supervise assigned personnel; and may operate a motor vehicle.

Consultant (early childhood education)

Correction Officer

Job description: Correction Officers, under supervision, maintain security and are responsible for the care, custody, control, job training and work performance of sentenced and detained inmates within New York City correctional facilities. They supervise inmate meals, visits, recreational programs, and other congregate activities; inspect assigned areas for conditions which threaten safety and security; conduct searches in order to detect contraband; complete forms and reports; maintain appropriate log books; communicate with other area Correction Officers to exchange pertinent information; issue verbal orders, announcements and explanations to inmates; observe inmates and make recommendations concerning medical and/or psychiatric referrals; safeguard Department supplies and equipment; escort inmates within and outside of the facility including their transportation in Departmental vehicles; respond to unusual incidents and disturbances; enforce security procedures in accordance with Department guidelines; request medical assistance for inmates when necessary; count and verify the number of inmates present in assigned areas; verify identification of inmates; supervise inmates of either sex; operate a motor vehicle; and perform related work.

Engineering Technician

Job description: At Assignment Level 1: Engineering Technicians, under direct supervision, with little latitude for independent judgement, perform engineering technician work such as: prepare drawings and maps from data with or without sketches; review and interpret drawings and specifications; perform inspections and tests; participate in routine surveys and assist surveyors by performing various tasks; make calculations which may require the application of geometric, trigonometric, algebraic principles and formulas, and techniques; prepare reports, memos, and correspondence; maintain office records of drawings, plans, maps, surveys, and inspection data; make copies of drawings, trace, ink, and letter drawings; check for errors; participate in routine inspections, observing and checking the installation of materials or equipment and observing tests of same; take samples of borings, and ensure conformance with plans and regulations. Engineering Technicians may utilize computers and may drive motor vehicles.

Exterminator

Job description: Exterminators, under general supervision, perform work in the prevention, control, and elimination of insects, vermin and other pests from buildings and surrounding areas including parks; inspect areas of infestation; use the most effective insecticides, rodenticides, baits, traps, etc., for exterminating pests as required; keep records of equipment usage, work schedules, and exterminating operations performed; and may drive a motor vehicle.

Water Use Inspector

Deadline: July 30

Job description: Water Use Inspectors, under supervision, receive training in and perform work of varying degrees of difficulty and responsibility in the field and/or the office, in the conduct of inspections to maintain the purity of water and to ensure conformance to codes, standards, plans and specifications relating to the metering, sale and use of City water. Water Use Inspectors enforce the Administrative Code and other laws, regulations, and rules as they relate to the metering, sale, use and discharge of City water; service and maintain mechanical and electronic water meters, water meter reading equipment, related equipment and parts, including measuring elements, register heads and meter set; replace water meters; read and may repair water meters on site; verify water meter readings and operation of meter reading equipment and report or repair this equipment; test meters to ensure that water consumption is properly registered on the meters; serve notices of the need to repair defective meters; inspect for and issue Environmental Control Board Notices of Violation; issue notices of violations of rules and regulations regarding the installation, maintenance, and use of water meters and regarding leakage and waste of water; assist in and perform routine tasks related to water use and metering in Citywide programs conducted by the Department of Environmental Protection; utilize hand held computer and adapter to read and program meter interface units; receive on-the-job training in the performance of Water Use Inspector tasks; prepare reports requiring simple mathematical computations; may testify at Environmental Control Board Hearings; and operate a motor vehicle in the performance of assigned duties.
