Update:

Ever feel overwhelmed at having to do too much? Do you feel like you struggle to remain organised and sane in tough moments? Has James Clear’s Atomic Habits done nothing for you? Well, as much as writing this is therapy for my mind, reading it could well be therapy for yours.

But I’m not so arrogant as to say that my words will help you. Oh, no. I’m talking about the scientific approach of the so-called ‘1% rule’, which can help you not only to get organised in your home, but also in your mind.

This simple trick, it seems, may be the key to changing one’s mentality from a messy person with good intentions (me) to someone who actually manages to sort things out.

What is the 1% rule for staying organised?

The 1-Percent Rule comes from lifestyle influencer Holly Blakey, who explains the ideology in simple terms:

“When you have a list of one million things to do and don’t know where to start, put aside the list and just do one small thing to make your home one percent better”, with that action being anything from washing up a plate to putting yesterday’s pizza box in the bin.

“It’s a simple action that triggers a change in your head,” she adds. “Simplifying into small victories creates a big internal shift.”

It seems like there is science behind it too. Scientific American published the following: “at first glance, breaking down a bigger goal into smaller pieces might seem like a superficial ‘reframing trick.’ In actuality, it is a versatile goal-setting strategy that you can apply to almost any target.”
