Update:

In the final batch of payments on its schedule for April, the Social Security Administration (SSA) is preparing to distribute monthly benefits checks to millions of Americans on Social Security retirement.

The payments are due to go out on Wednesday, April 23, with many recipients of Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and survivor benefits also in line for a check.

Who will be paid Social Security benefits on Wednesday, April 23?

Of the United States’ nearly 69 million recipients of retirement, SSDI or survivor benefits, many are paid on one of three Wednesdays each month.

Their checks are issued under a staggered system that determines a person’s payment date by their birthday.

Next Wednesday, checks are scheduled to paid to Social Security recipients whose date of birth falls between the 21st and 31st of the month.

As is outlined in the inset below, the preceding two Wednesdays in April saw payments go out to beneficiaries born between the first and the 20th of the month.

April 2025's Wednesday payment schedule in full:

  • Weds., Apr. 9: recipients born from 1st to 10th
  • Weds., Apr. 16: recipients born from 11th to 20th
  • Weds., Apr. 23: recipients born from 21st to 31st

Who is paid outside the three-Wednesdays system?

Beneficiaries who began claiming retirement, SSDI or survivor benefits before May 1997 are paid on the third of the month, regardless of their birthday.

And recipients of Supplemental Security Income (SSI) - a separate benefit for low-income people who are over 65 or have a disability - get their check on the first of the month.

Anyone who receives both SSI and regular Social Security gets the former on the first and the latter on the third.

How much is the monthly Social Security retirement check?

To be exact, the average monthly retirement check currently stands at $1,980.86, according to figures published by the SSA last month.
