Social Security is sending out checks for around $2,000 on ave. today, Wednesday April 9: Find out who’s getting one
Many Social Security recipients across the U.S. are scheduled to get their latest monthly benefits check.

For many Americans on Social Security retirement benefits, today - Wednesday, April 9 - is the day they receive their latest monthly check.
The Social Security Administration (SSA) is also scheduled to send out payments to certain recipients of Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and survivor benefits.
Who is paid their Social Security check today, April 9?
Of America’s 68 million recipients of retirement, SSDI or survivor benefits, many receive their money on one of three Wednesdays each month, as part of a staggered system that decides a person’s payment by their date of birth.
Today, checks are due to go out to recipients born between the first and 10th of each month.
The three-Wednesdays schedule will then continue on Wednesday, April 16 and Wednesday, April 23.
April 2025's Wednesday payment schedule:
- Wednesday, April 9: beneficiaries born from 1st to 10th
- Wednesday, April 16: beneficiaries born from 11th to 20th
- Wednesday, April 23: beneficiaries born from 21st to 31st
What exceptions are there to the three-Wednesdays timeline?
Some long-term Social Security recipients are not paid on a Wednesday: if your retirement, SSDI or survivor benefits started before May 1997, your check is normally paid on the third of the month, regardless of your birthday.
This month, therefore, these Social Security recipients were scheduled to get their money on Thursday last week.
Another exception to the three-Wednesdays system is anyone who receives benefits as part of a separate SSA scheme known as Supplemental Security Income (SSI).
SSI, a means-tested program which differs from the three schemes above as it does not depend on recipients’ payment of Social Security taxes, is usually issued on the first of the month.
This means that April’s SSI checks were due to be distributed on Tuesday last week.
It’s also worth noting that some people in the U.S. claim both SSI and regular Social Security benefits. These beneficiaries are normally paid the former on the first and the latter on the third.
You’ll find the SSA’s full payment calendar for 2025 in this online pdf shared by the agency.
