Social Security payments won’t go out to those who don’t meet these requirements in May
Individuals who receive monthly payments should be aware of the circumstances under which their deposits may be suspended.

The Social Security Administration (SSA) has warned that it will officially stop benefit payments to individuals who no longer meet the eligibility requirements established by law. People receiving monthly Social Security payments should understand the situations under which their deposits could be suspended.
According to current regulations, payments may be suspended if there are changes that affect a person’s eligibility. These include leaving the country for an extended period, returning to work, losing legal residency status, or being incarcerated. The SSA requires that all eligibility conditions be properly verified.
Under what circumstances can SSA payments be suspended?
The SSA explains that one of the most common reasons for suspension is failing to comply with administrative requirements. The agency frequently requests documentation to confirm that a person is still eligible. If these requests are ignored within the specified timeframe, payments may be suspended.
Payments may also be suspended if a beneficiary leaves the country for more than 30 consecutive days. Non-U.S. citizens who remain outside the country for over a month could have their payments stopped if the destination country does not have a benefits agreement with the United States.
For retirees who begin receiving benefits before age 67, annual income limits apply. In 2025, the limit was $22,320. If a person works and earns more than that amount, the SSA may reduce or suspend their payments.
For non-U.S. citizens who lose their lawful permanent resident status, benefits may also be discontinued. Any changes in immigration status must be reported immediately, as failing to do so could result in penalties or even repayment of benefits already received.
Individuals who are incarcerated for more than 30 days will also lose their right to receive payments during that time. After release, they may apply to have their benefits reinstated.

Although a suspension may not be permanent, it can result in payment delays lasting several months. Once reinstatement is approved, payments will return to normal.
