Social Security’s baby-name rankings have a twist - one name cracks the top 10 twice
In the Social Security Administration’s latest list of the U.S.’s most common baby names, there is - again - an interesting quirk.
The same two names again topped the Social Security Administration’s (SSA) ranking of the U.S.’s most common choices for new-born babies in 2025.
For the seventh year in a row, Liam and Olivia were the most common choices for boys and girls, respectively, according to the SSA’s latest list of the 1,000 most popular names in the U.S.
“The nation’s most authoritative source”
“The baby names are drawn from Social Security card applications submitted at birth, making SSA the nation’s authoritative source for baby naming trends,” the agency said in a statement this month.
The same name twice in one list?
And, as in 2024, two alternative spellings of the same name made the girls’ top 10. Sophia came fifth, up from sixth, while Sofia placed ninth, having also risen one spot up the list.
Across both top 10s, there was only one new entrant: Eliana made its first appearance, featuring in the final spot.
