Stage collapse at Mexico election rally: how many people have died at Jorge Maynez’s campaign event?
50 people are reported as injured with five dead after a stage collapsed at a pre-election political rally in Nuevo Leon.
An election rally staged by the Citizens’ Movement party staged in San Pedro Garza García, Nuevo León turned into tragedy after a stage collapsed injuring fifty with five people reported as having died.
Local Governor, Samuel Garcia told reporters that dozens are also currently being treated at local clinics for a number of sustained injuries.
Jorge Alvarez Maynez, the presidential candidate for the centrist Citizens’ Movement party, claimed that the stage collapsed at the rally due to sudden gust with of wind caused the stage to collapse at the event with the 38-year-old politician claiming on social that was “OK” and was being treated at a local hospital. He did however add that many members of his team were hurt and he had decided to suspend campaign activities.
Governor Garcia has warned residents to stay indoors amid strong thunderstorms in the area adding that the inclement weather was a contributing to the accident.
Alvarez Maynez is currently third in the latest polls in Mexico’s presidential election set which is set to be staged on Sunday 2 June. He is trailing far behind ruling party candidate Claudia Sheinbaum and second-place Xochitl Galvez, who represents a broad opposition coalition.
Later on Wednesday night, Citizens’ Party national coordinator Dante Delgado, confirmed that party member and Mexican Senator Laura Ballesteros had suffered a series of fractures and was being treated in hospital.
