Since last year, several US states have approved stimulus checks and tax rebates in a bid to combat the rising cost of living.

One of these states is New Mexico. Given the strain that inflation has placed on households’ budgets, governor Michelle Lujan Grisham and the state legislature this year brought in an income tax rebate of up to $1,000 for New Mexican taxpayers.

The state also approved the payment of relief checks for New Mexico residents who don’t have to file taxes.

Tax rebate of up to $1,000: who gets it?

The New Mexico tax rebate, which is refundable - meaning that it can exceed the amount of tax you paid during the tax year - is worth $1,000 to: married couples who file joint tax returns; heads of households; and surviving spouses.

Meanwhile, single filers and married New Mexicans who file individually get $500.

What do you have to do to receive the rebate?

The rebate is sent automatically to New Mexico residents who have submitted a Personal Income Tax (PIT) return for the 2021 tax year and do not feature as a dependent on any other taxpayer’s return.

Checks are either issued by direct deposit or mailed as a paper check.

Taxpaying residents have until 31 May 2024 to submit their 2021 PIT and claim their rebate.

Many New Mexicans will have already filed their 2021 state tax returns when this scheme was first announced earlier this year. If that’s the case, they should have received their rebate in late June.

For residents who aren’t required to file taxes, there are relief payments of $500 and $1,000, which the state has been issuing “based on an application process with the Human Services Department”.
