2025 Tax Season
Tax season 2025: The date IRS begins processing returns and when you can expect your refund
Tax season starts on January 27. Find out when you'll get your refund if you file on the first day.

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) announced that the 2025 tax season begins on Monday, January 27. This year, the agency will process returns and refunds for the tax year 2024.
The deadline to file taxes is April 15. As always, those who request an extension can file their tax return until October. However, the extension does not apply to tax payments, so it is essential to pay them on time to avoid penalties or fines.
Taxpayers may be eligible for a tax refund when filing their tax return. If you file your return on the first day, Monday, January 27, here’s when you might receive it.
The first day the IRS will begin processing tax returns in 2025
The IRS has informed taxpayers that refunds for individuals who file electronically and opt for direct deposit are typically issued within 21 calendar days. For example, if you file your tax return on January 27, you might receive your refund by February 17. In contrast, taxpayers who submit their returns by mail can expect their refunds to arrive between 6 and 12 weeks later.
To receive your tax refund as quickly as possible, you should file your return electronically and complete it as clearly and error-free as possible. Otherwise, the IRS will take longer to review it, which will delay the sending of your refund.
Here’s how to track your tax refunds
You can track your payment with the “Where’s My Refund?” tool. Additionally, check your refund status through the IRS2Go app, which allows you to track your refund 24 hours after the IRS receives your electronic return or four weeks after you mail your paper return.
