Taxpayers in these 14 states can apply for disaster relief: When is the deadline to file returns?

These individuals and businesses have been granted extended deadlines to file their 2023 tax returns.

After the success of Direct File in the states that piloted it this tax season, it will be rolled out nationwide, allowing taxpayers to save money and time

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has issued an important reminder for taxpayers in 14 states and 2 territories affected by severe weather and natural disasters.

The adjusted deadline applies to:

All of:

  • Louisiana
  • Vermont,
  • Puerto Rico
  • the Virgin Islands, and

Parts of:

  • Arizona
  • Connecticut
  • Illinois
  • Kentucky
  • Minnesota
  • Missouri
  • Montana
  • New York
  • Pennsylvania
  • South Dakota
  • Texas
  • Washington state

The IRS website has state-by-state information

For these people, the deadline to file 2023 tax returns is February 3, 2025.

Taxpayers in the entire states of Alabama, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina will have until May 1, 2025 to file their 2023 return.

This extension applies to those who had previously received an extension from the original April 15, 2024 filing deadline.

This relief is automatic for taxpayers with an IRS address of record in the disaster area. Those qualifying for relief but living outside the disaster area need to contact the IRS directly at 866-562-5227
