The city where rats and snakes are appearing in the streets at all hours: “We have never seen so many of them”
Some neighborhoods in this Spanish city report a surge in these animals, which are becoming increasingly common. Residents blame the condition of the local stream.
The Spanish town of Lloret de Mar, in Girona, is facing a growing problem with animals appearing on its streets. Rats and snakes have been roaming freely for the past few weeks, raising concerns among residents in several parts of the city. This is especially true in some neighborhoods, where these animals are frequently spotted in busy streets.
“We’ve never seen such a presence before,” one resident told Lloret Gaceta, adding that she fears encountering rodents every time she takes out the trash. Another local says these animals can be seen at any time of day. According to the residents, the cause may be the accumulation of vegetation and stagnant water in the stream.
As for the reptiles, their appearance is also a more recent issue. Witnesses say these snakes come directly from the stream running through the two mentioned neighborhoods. This is not an isolated problem; sightings of these reptiles have been increasing, causing insecurity among the population.
Changes in the stream
A few weeks ago, the Lloret de Mar City Council announced a new project aimed at transforming the stream into a green, sustainable, and accessible public space. “Goodbye to concrete” is the slogan for this initiative, supported by the Center for Mediterranean River Studies at the University of Vic – UCC and Naturalea, a company specializing in landscape bioengineering.
“The project aims to move away from the image of a concrete channel and turn the stream into a place where residents can walk, enjoy nature, and reconnect with the local landscape,” the city council emphasized. So far, the initial study has identified plants like wild celery and watercress along the stream. Additionally, a selective cleanup of the area is expected to take place by late spring.
