The Cliffside Coaster, located near Lake Placid, New York, is the longest outdoor roller coaster in the United States. Nestled in Mount Van Hoevenberg, you’ll find a spectacular outdoor recreational area, with the Cliffside Coaster being one of many activities and attractions to keep visitors busy.

However, this ride is unlike a theme park attraction. Instead, it is a more old-school roller coaster that takes riders on a tour of the surrounding natural area. And though it is not modern, the attraction opened in 2020. The roller coaster is described as a “high-speed ride that features many sudden twists and turns.”

Who can take a ride?

Those thinking of taking their families to Lake Placid to try out the attraction should know that children as young as three can ride it, so long as they are at least three feet tall. To sit in the driver’s seat, however, one must be at least nine years old and a minimum of 52 inches tall. Due to the sudden jolting riders can experience, the website says that it is not recommended “for guests with head, neck, or bone injuries, recent surgery, heart trouble, high blood pressure, heart conditions, or guests who are pregnant.”

What else is there to do at Mount Van Hoevenberg?

In addition to the roller coaster, visitors can enjoy gorgeous hikes, bike rides, and areas for climbing. In the winter, cross-country skiing is an option, and as a site of the Olympic Winter Games, you can take part in bobsledding, the skeleton, and the luge. In November, the cross-country skiing paths will open again.

The bobsledding experience costs $125 a ride, and riders must be at least nine years old and 52 inches tall.

Biking passes cost $10 a day, but those under six ride for free. If you aren’t able to bring your bike and gear, don’t worry, rentals are available.
