Update:

The cost for spreading falsehoods that the 2020 US election was rigged has grown yet again. Newsmax disclosed in financial filings on Monday that it has agreed to pay Dominion Voting Systems $67 million to settle another defamation lawsuit the network was facing.

Last year, the right-wing cable channel struck a deal with another voting tech company on the eve of the case going before a jury. Newsmax revealed in a public filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission that it agreed to pay Smartmatic $40 million.

Over $1 billion in settlements and defamation awards for election lies

Newsmax isn’t the only one who has had to shell out large sums of money for claiming falsely that the 2020 US election was rigged.

Fox News is still battling a lawsuit brought by Smartmatic but settled with Dominion in 2023 for a staggering $787 million.

One America News also settled a defamation lawsuit last year brought against it by Smartmatic. The terms of the settlement however were not revealed with OAN attorney Chip Babcock telling CNN that the case was “resolved pursuant to a confidential agreement.”

Rudy Giuliani, Donald Trump’s former lawyer, was ordered to pay Ruby Freeman and her daughter, Wandrea “Shaye” Moss, $148 million in 2023. A jury determined that the former New York City mayor had defamed them by pushing lies about the two Georgia election workers tampering with the ballot count in Fulton County.

Mike Lindell, one of the biggest proponents of myth that the 2020 US election was stolen, was also found to have made two defamatory statements about a Dominion employee. A jury ordered the founder of MyPillow to pay Eric Coomer $2.3 million.
