The reason why iPhone’s volume buttons will no longer work with Spotify Connect
A new feature on the latest iPhone system has plenty of users frustrated.
The feud continues. Apple and Spotify have locked horns once again as the two tech giants try to trip each other up, and this time Apple have done the dirty, with its users the losers.
Spotify’s volume can now no longer be controlled by the physical buttons on the side of the iPhone, as, according to Spotify, Apple have “discontinued” the technology that allowed users of the music platform to control their volume via the physical buttons when streaming via Spotify Connect. The Verge note that “the Sonos app has also stopped letting iPhone users change the volume of their devices using physical buttons for similar reasons.”
The music app, in their statement, made it clear that this is a decision that comes from the mobile technology company and not themselves.
As of September 3, when Apple roll out their new iOS update, the physical iPhone buttons to turn the volume up and down will no longer work: instead, users will be served with a notification from Spotify which tells them that they will instead need to use the volume slider within the app. A “Want to change the volume?” notification will take Spotify users to the slider in the app, which they have to click on to use.
As pointed out by Mashable, this is not the first time that the two tech behemoths have clashed. Earlier this year, Apple was hit with a $2 billion fine in the EU “after Spotify filed a complaint against the iPhone-maker over its policies prohibiting app makers from sending users outside of Apple’s official App Store in order to sign up for subscription services.”

Apple moved quickly to put out a public statement slamming Spotify for using Apple tools to run the iPhone app without paying the company.
It seems that volume-gate is just the latest in a long line of sword-prodding from the two.
