The ultimate form of parody? Take a look at this Chinese opera inspired by Donald Trump

Political satire has a long history in the United States and President Donald Trump has been the subject of countless sketches on the likes of Saturday Night Live and the various current affairs programs.

Less common, however, is to be parodied in China with an unflattering portrayal in a Cantonese Opera. Yet that is exactly what has happened to Trump, in a new show entitled ‘Trump, The Twins President.’

The show is currently running in Hong Kong and was actually first introduced in 2019. However the latest version to be released includes some new material that mirrors actual real-world event.

NBC reports that the Trump opera now includes a section on the infamous Oval Office exchange with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and a version of the assassination attempt in Pennsylvania last year.

The three-and-a-half hour show begins with a dream from Ivanka Trump, the President’s daughter, who sees a fictional twin brother of her father living in China, named Chuan Pu. The alternate Trump then makes his way to the US and steps in as a replacement when the real Trump is abducted by aliens.

The show was written by Cantonese opera composer Edward Li Kui-Ming, who spoke to CNN about his creation. He described it as “a comedy reflecting how people are being influenced by President Donald Trump.“

Kui-Ming continued: “He is really (influential). And that makes me want to do…a drama related to him."

The creator has insisted that he is not trying to stoke any international tensions with the ‘Trump opera’, although some sections do verge on controversial.

In one scene Trump is seen quarreling with Zelenskyy, in a comedic re-imagining of their White House spat. The two leaders jab at each other before Trump shoots a water pistol at the Ukrainian President.
