In the heart of the Pacific Ocean, thousands of miles from any major city, lies a place that feels like it belongs in an adventure novel. This is the atoll of Ahe, in French Polynesia, where one family has created what many consider “the most remote farm in the world.”

The Humbert family lives there, with three generations dedicated to pearl farming. They chose to settle in this isolated location decades ago. Their story began in the 1970s, when they arrived on a sailboat they built themselves and settled on a small sandy islet with virtually no infrastructure.

Ahe is not a typical island but an atoll, a ring-shaped coral formation surrounding a lagoon of about 75 square miles. It rises only a few meters above sea level. Located nearly 300 miles northeast of Tahiti, its isolation is extreme, with very limited physical contact with the outside world.

A business in isolation

Despite the challenges, the family has successfully developed Kamoka, their own pearl farm and brand. Their pearls can sell for as much as $14,000. The business has thrived thanks to the unique conditions of the environment, although it has not been without obstacles.

Among the main challenges they face are the volatility of the pearl market, logistical isolation, and even natural dangers such as shark attacks during the dives required for pearl cultivation.

Daily life is not easy either. The family has had to adapt to living largely disconnected from electrical grids and standard services, creating a self-sufficient lifestyle in an environment where every resource is limited.

Even so, the Humberts have managed to turn that isolation into an opportunity. Surrounded by crystal-clear waters and stunning landscapes, they have built a life that blends tradition, business, and a deep connection to nature, far removed from the pace of city living.

Decades after their arrival, the family remains on Ahe, proving that even in the most remote places on Earth, it is possible to build a sustainable way of life and turn it into a true success.
