Update:

What was supposed to be an investment in sustainability and energy savings turned into a bureaucratic and financial nightmare for a Polish family who, five years ago, installed solar panels on their single-family home. Despite sunny days and seemingly excellent energy production, their electric bills started rising sharply—with no logical explanation.

The case was shared on a solar panel forum. For the first few years, the photovoltaic system worked flawlessly. The inverter app showed consistently high output, and the family was confident that their investment of over 30,000 zloty (more than $8,000) would pay for itself within a decade. However, over time, the bills began to show a steady increase in consumption, even though the household’s habits hadn’t changed.

Things got worse when the family decided to switch from semiannual to bimonthly billing in an effort to get more clarity. That’s when they discovered that, in just four months, they had been charged 2,600 zloty (around $700)—a figure that exceeded their total annual consumption from previous years. “We were stunned. It made no sense. Production was still high, and we hadn’t changed anything at home,” said the homeowner.

Faced with the situation, the family began calling their electric company and grid operator. But no one could provide a convincing explanation for the excessive usage. “It was like talking to a wall. No one knew anything, and everyone kept passing the buck,” the homeowner added.

Independent lab testing provides the answer

The key to solving the mystery came from an unexpected source. A friend—unrelated to the companies involved—suggested having the electricity meter tested by an independent lab. Although the idea seemed risky, the family decided to give it a try. They filed a formal request with the grid operator to have the meter inspected, but not without resistance. “They kept reminding us that if the meter turned out to be working correctly, we’d have to pay 300 zloty (over $80) for the test,” the homeowner recalled.

Despite the financial risk, the family went ahead. Independent technicians visited the home, removed the faulty meter, and installed a new one. The results were immediate—and revealing: the next bimonthly bill came to just 140 zloty ($37), of which only 75 zloty ($20) was for actual electricity usage. The rest was made up of fixed and grid fees. This dramatic difference was the first tangible sign that the issue lay in a defective meter.

Bill recalculation and resolution

A week later, official confirmation arrived. The lab sent a letter certifying that the removed meter was indeed malfunctioning. This document opened the door for the family to file a claim and request recalculation of their previous bills, along with reimbursement for the overcharges. The utility company agreed to recalculate the past bills using the new meter as a reference point to estimate actual consumption.

“It was a long battle, but it was worth it. Now we know we weren’t crazy—and that the system can fail,” said the family, relieved to have finally resolved the exaggerated energy use that had plagued their solar-powered home.
