Tourists among 25 dead after massive nightclub blaze erupts in Goa’s top party zone

At least 25 people were killed in a fire at the Birch By Romeo Lane nightclub in the tourist hub of Goa, an unlicensed venue set amid farmland that also lacked permits to sell alcohol and had no fire-safety protocols in place. Among the first confirmed victims were four tourists and several members of the club’s staff.

“I am closely reviewing the situation following the tragic fire in Arpora, where 25 people lost their lives and six were injured. The six injured individuals are stable and receiving the best medical care. I have ordered a judicial inquiry into the entire incident to determine its cause and who is responsible,” said Goa’s chief minister, Pramod Sawant.

The cause of the fire remains unknown, though early findings suggest most victims died from asphyxiation. “Some people managed to run out, but others did not. As a result, several people died of suffocation. According to preliminary information, four of the victims were tourists and the rest were employees of the club,” Sawant added.

The number of injured has risen to roughly 50, with varying degrees of severity. Investigators believe the fire may have started when a gas cylinder exploded near the entrance to the kitchen. The blaze erupted around 1 a.m. According to the club’s Instagram page, a “Bollywood Banger Night” event was underway when the fire broke out. The club’s operator has been taken into custody.
