After 70 years of being a top destination for toy-loving children, Toys “R” Us filed for bankruptcy and closed up shop in 2018 amid the rise of big-box retailers like Walmart and Target as well as the advent of Amazon.

After prior failed attempts at staging a comeback, the toy company will give it another go, but this time the relaunch will proceed with a different approach.

WHP Global, the company which bought Toys “R” Us in 2021, has announced what it calls its “Air, Land, and Sea” expansion, in reference to the 24 flagship stores they are planning to open in conjunction with a rollout of shops at airports and cruise ships.

“The Toys “R” Us brand is growing fast and our expansion into air, land and sea is a testament to the brand’s strength,” according to a statement by WHP Global CEO Yehuda Shmidman.

The “Air” part of the campaign will be the first to take off, with the opening of a store in November at Dallas Fort Worth International Airport through a partnership with Duty Free Americas. The launch at the second-busiest airport in the world will take place in time for the holiday season.

Toys “R” Us has stated that stores catering to cruise ships will feature cruise-themed merchandise, although they have not yet given details regarding which cruise companies will carry the stores.

The retailer plans to begin opening the first of the two dozen flagship stores early next year through a partnership with Go! Retail Group.

Toys “R” Us currently has 452 shops in Macy’s locations across the US, and according to a representative of the toy company, the new flagship stores will operate in areas that complement their presence at Macy’s.
