Update:

More details of President Donald Trump’s phone call with Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro have emerged, revealing the strained relationship between the two leaders.

Trump initially confirmed the call on Sunday, November 30, while traveling on Air Force One, the presidential plane. “I can’t say if it was a good or bad call, it was just a call,” the US president said at the time.

But as the days have passed more details have emerged about what happened during the exchange, which, according to sources close to the White House, lasted approximately 15 minutes.

Reuters reported that the conversation took place on November 21. According to four sources, Maduro told Trump that he was willing to leave Venezuela as long as he and his family were guaranteed full amnesty, including the lifting of all US sanctions. He also requested the dismissal of a case against him at the International Criminal Court.

However, that was not the only request from Maduro, who also asked that sanctions be lifted on more than 100 officials in his government and that Vice President Delcy Rodríguez be named as head of the interim government.

What did Trump say to Maduro’s requests?

The report continues by revealing that Trump rejected all of Maduro’s requests and issued an ultimatum. He also warned the Venezuelan leader that he had until the following Friday (November 28) to leave the country.

Speaking on Monday, December 1 Maduro spoke publicly about “threats” received by Trump and insisted that his determination to remain in charge remained strong.

“They can never, under any historical circumstances we may face, derail us from the path of building a powerful, sovereign, free, and socialist Venezuela, for the rest of this century and beyond. Never!”

In his speech Maduro also quoted the late Hugo Chávez, saying: “They have not taken us one centimeter off the right path with their psychological terrorism, the path we must always continue to walk.”
