U.S. couple moves to Europe and explains why their life is like leaving a ‘bad relationship’: “We’re like babies”
An American couple compare moving to Spain to leaving a toxic relationship, finding a calmer, more affordable life after overcoming several obstacles.

In 2022, Laura Hamlin and Allan Amer made a life-changing decision: to leave the United States behind in search of something radically different. Frustrated by years of political division, particularly in Florida, the couple set off on a new adventure in Spain—a country that had captivated them on previous visits.
Their journey began much earlier, in 2012, when they moved to Florida. Laura, originally from New York, never quite felt at home. “The political climate was exhausting,” she recalls. Determined to escape the polarization of their home country, they explored the U.S. in an RV, searching for a place that truly felt right. Eventually, they realized their future lay across the Atlantic. “Moving to Spain was like leaving a toxic relationship,” Laura says, reflecting on how Florida’s political environment had drained her well-being.
Though the relocation process was long and complex, relief washed over them when they finally secured their non-lucrative visa. In December 2022, they arrived in Spain, eager to begin the life they had long envisioned. “It was like a dream come true,” Laura says. The first few months were filled with excitement as they traveled across the country, visiting cities like Granada, Córdoba, and Toledo, immersing themselves in Spain’s rich history and architecture. “As Americans, we’re like babies here,” they joked, awed by their new surroundings.
However, challenges soon emerged. Just four months after their move, Allan suffered an accident that left him hospitalized for several weeks. When complications with his private health insurance arose, they had no choice but to return to the U.S. As Allan recovered, they remained determined to return to Spain. Finally, in November 2023, they made the move once again.

“We love the lifestyle”
Since their return, Laura and Allan have settled near Cartagena in the Murcia region, embracing a slower, more fulfilling way of life. They appreciate the accessibility, tranquility, and affordability Spain offers. “We love the lifestyle here,” they say, especially valuing the fresh, healthy food and the lower cost of living compared to the U.S.
One of their biggest challenges has been learning Spanish. Despite taking online classes and using language apps, communication remains difficult. “We’ve attended some in-person classes, but we still don’t understand much,” Laura admits, acknowledging that the language barrier is a persistent struggle.
Despite the obstacles, the couple has no immediate plans to return to the U.S. “Florida was never a place where I felt completely happy,” Laura explains. While they may consider moving back to Buffalo, New York, if Allan’s health requires it, for now, their focus is on building a life in Spain. “You never know what the future holds,” she says, but at this moment, Spain is home.

Although life in Spain hasn’t always been easy, Laura and Allan have no regrets. The sense of taking control of their destiny, the peace they’ve found, and the opportunities they now enjoy make the journey well worth it.
