OSCARS 2023

What is the highest grossing movie in history and how many people saw it?

‘Avatar’ has broken all box office records, with the second film in the saga is at number three on the list of the highest grossing movies in history.

Update:
‘Avatar’ has broken all box office records, with the second film in the saga is at number three on the list of the highest grossing movies in history.

The critical success of a film is not always matched by its result at the box office, although bringing in the bucks does tend to indicate the general public were keen on a movie. Through film history, only a few movies have had the privilege of hitting the list of the highest-grossing films of all time, but right now the top spot continues to be held by a film which had its premiere 13 years ago.

‘Avatar’, the highest grossing film in history

Avatar’ is still the highest-grossing film of all time, and it seems that the sprawling James Cameron epic will continue to hold the top spot despite recent fierce competition. In total Avatar grossed over $2.8 billion at the box office, carving out its place in film history.

One of the best Marvel movies of recent times ‘Endgame’ came close to overtaking Avatar, pulling in $2.79 billion million dollars. And in fact at one point it DID overtake Avatar to become the highest grossing film of all time, however the re-release in China of ‘Avatar’ allowed James Cameron’s film to boost its box office and go back to number one.

How many people actually saw Avatar?

It’s difficult to estimate the exact number of people who saw Avatar, as not everyone who watched it did so in a movie theater. Additionally, the film was released in different countries at different times, which makes it hard to determine the exact global viewership.

Nonetheless, a rough estimate can be made. Assuming an average movie ticket price of $8.97 (the average cinema ticket price in the United States in 2009), we can divide the worldwide box office gross by the average ticket price to get an estimate of the number of tickets sold. Doing so gives us an estimate of around 313 million tickets sold worldwide.

Of course, this is just a rough estimate, and the actual number of people who saw Avatar is likely far higher than this.

‘Avatar 2′, on the podium

‘Avatar’ has only gone and done it again. The film saga, which started in 2009, has now had its second installment. This new movie, which has four 2023 Oscar Award nominations (Best Picture, Best Sound, Best Production Design and Best Visual Effects), has also soared onto the podium as one of the highest-grossing films of the history of cinema.

The new production by James Cameron has gone over $2.27 million dollars, making it the third highest grossing film of all time.

What’s more there will be a third part to the saga, expected to be released in 2024 and that will continue the story of the planet Pandora and its inhabitants, as well as likely pulling in the box office bucks.
