For fans of the ghoulish and the ghostly, Halloween is a major day in the calendar and the date that kick-starts the holiday season. It’s the second-biggest commercial holiday after Christmas Day, with Americans expected to spend $12.2 billion on costumes, candies, and parties this year.

But unlike upcoming celebrations like Veterans Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Day, Halloween is not a federal holiday. As such, most stores and places of business will be staying open on Tuesday, 31 October.

Almost all businesses and essential services will be following their usual operating hours, so you have a chance to pick up any last-minute Halloween costumes and stock up on treat-or-treat goodies.
