Who is Angela Alsobrooks, the Maryland Democrat who will face Larry Hogan on Senate Race

Angela Alsobrooks, the Democratic nominee for the US Senate seat in Maryland, emerged victorious in a closely watched primary battle against Congressman David Trone on 14 May. Alsobrooks, the current County Executive of Prince George’s County, Maryland, has a strong track record as a former State’s Attorney for the county

.At 52 years old, Alsobrooks stands to make history as only the third Black woman ever elected to the US Senate and the first Black person elected from Maryland. Her campaign emphasised her roots in a working-class Black family in Maryland and her accomplishments in bringing jobs, schools, and securing the new FBI headquarters for Prince George’s County.

Despite facing a significant financial disadvantage against Trone, who poured over $61 million of his own money into the primary race, Alsobrooks managed to secure a double-digit victory.

Alsobrooks’ next challenge

In the upcoming general election, she will go head-to-head with former Republican Governor Larry Hogan, setting the stage for a high-stakes battle that could impact the delicate balance of power in the Senate.

Hogan served as the two-term Governor of Maryland from 2015 to 2023. Known for his centrist political stance and criticism of former President Donald Trump, Hogan secured a commanding victory in the Republican primary race for the U.S. Senate seat in Maryland. Despite entering the race on the final day possible, 9 February, Hogan dominated the field with 60.1% of the votes.

“I do feel a little bit like I’m running toward the burning building,” Hogan said. “You can either give up and walk away or you can continue to try to fight to get things back to the place you want it to be.”

With the current Democrat senator stepping down, Democrats may have thought their candidate would be a shoe-in. However, Hogan’s undeniable popularity will surely cause a challenge come November.
