Jason Carter, the eldest grandchild of Jimmy Carter, will delivery one of the eulogies at the 39th US president’s state funeral service in Washington DC.
Jason Carter has been one of the family members of the 39th US president who has been most in the spotlight since Jimmy Carter started hospice care at his home in Plains, Georgia in February 2023. As Chairman of the Carter Center, he had been sharing updates on the health of his grandfather to the public and press.
He gave a moving speech on the legacy of his grandfather, who died at age 100 on December 29, at a memorial service at the Carter Presidential Center in Atlanta before the late presidents remains were brought to Washington DC for a state funeral service on Thursday. He will again give a eulogy at the memorial service to be held at the Washington National Cathedral which the general public can view via livestream.

Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter were able to celebrate their 77th anniversary before she passed away in November last year at the age of 96. Wed in 1946, the couple had four children, three boys and a girl. Jason Carter was the couple’s first grandchild, born in 1975 to their eldest son John William, nicknamed Jack, and his first wife Juliette “Judy” Langford, daughter of former Georgia state senator James Langford.
After his parents divorced in 1989, Jason moved to Evanston, Illinois with his mother where he attended high school. Jason went to Duke University where he got a degree in both philosophy and political science. At Jason’s graduation ceremony in 1997, his grandfather Jimmy Carter gave the commencement address.
Upon leaving Duke, he joined the Peace Corps, following in the footsteps of his great-grandmother, Lillian Carter. Jason spent two years from 1998 to 2000 in the Peace Corps in South Africa, an experience which he later wrote a book about titled ‘Power Lines’.
Later he attended the University of Georgia School of Law. Jason graduated in 2004 summa cum laude with a Juris Doctor.
He served in the Georgia State Senate from 2010 to 2015 and made a run for the governorship in 2014 on the Democratic ticket but lost to the Republican Nathan Deal.
Besides being chairman of the Carter Center Board of Trustees, Jason is currently a partner at Bondurant, Mixson & Elmore in Atlanta. According to his bio at the firm, “Jason has secured some of the largest verdicts and settlements in Georgia history, including multiple recoveries in excess of $100 million.”
Jason has been married to Katherine ‘Kate’ Lewis since 2000. The couple have twin sons Henry and Thomas who were born in 2006.
