Why Finland is one of Europe’s best‑prepared nations for a crisis — and how supermarkets are part of the plan

Finland is widely regarded as one of the most prepared countries in Europe when it comes to national defense — and its strategy goes far beyond what most Americans might imagine. Janne Ahtoniemi, who works for the Finnish supermarket giant S Group, recently spoke with the BBC about just how deep that preparation runs.

“Finland’s strong security-of-supply system is built on decades of steady planning and training. Companies understand this mindset and their role in it. That’s why both the public and private sectors are willing to invest in supply security,” explained Ahtoniemi, who serves as S Group’s director of risk management.

If the Nordic nation were ever invaded, hit by a major natural disaster, or targeted by a large‑scale cyberattack, the supermarket chain already has a detailed plan outlining how it would help keep the country running.

A crisis playbook — even for grocery stores

S Group’s responsibility would be enormous: ensuring that Finland’s 5.6 million residents have enough food and essential supplies. And it’s not the only company with a role to play. Across the country, transportation companies, cybersecurity firms, defense contractors, and other critical businesses all maintain their own contingency plans designed to activate during a national emergency.

Kesko — S Group’s main competitor — is also part of the national readiness network. Executive Jyrki Tomminen put it simply: “We want to do our part to make sure Finnish society can function every day, no matter the circumstances.”

This emphasis on readiness isn’t just a government initiative — it’s woven into Finnish culture. The result is a population that deeply values security and is prepared to defend it if necessary.
