Will the United States have a white Christmas in 2025? Where snow is likely on December 25

The national forecast offers clues about where December 25 could be covered in white and where the Christmas dream may remain only an illusion.

Estados Unidos Update:

Every December, the same question echoes in millions of homes: will there be a white Christmas? While the image of snow falling on December 25 is a holiday classic, climate realities in the United States show that not all states have the same chances of experiencing that scene in 2025.

According to historical data and climate analyses, the highest probabilities of snow on Christmas are concentrated in the northern part of the country and in high-elevation areas.

Will there be a white Christmas in the United States in 2025?

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) says that the weather pattern that has sent temperatures plummeting far below average in parts of the United States will be changing. The jet stream will flatten out, going straight from west to east across the northern portion of the nation and blocking Artic air from penetrating further south.

This will allow temperatures to warm up, and melt the white stuff that is covering swaths of the central Midwest and the East Coast. However, while the snow cover will reduce in most cases, other portions of the US should still have it there by Christmas Day.

States such as Minnesota, North Dakota, Wisconsin, and Michigan top the list, of places that are likely to have snow on the ground Christmas Day, especially in regions downwind from the Great Lakes. Alaska, of course, is almost guaranteed to have a snow-covered landscape on that date.

Mountainous regions in the West also stand out, including Colorado, Utah, Wyoming, and parts of Montana, where elevation plays a crucial role. “Higher elevations have a significantly greater chance of having snow on the ground on December 25,” explains NOAA.

By contrast, much of the South and the West Coast have a very low probability of seeing any white stuff on the ground. States such as Florida, Texas, California, and Arizona rarely see snow at Christmas, except during unusual weather events. Even in the Northeast, cities like New York and Boston depend on specific weather systems. They may experience intense cold, but not always snow accumulation.

Technical definition of a white Christmas

According to meteorolgists, a white Christmas does not depend solely on snowfall that day, but on having at least one inch of snow on the ground. While it might be cold, without prior accumulation, it is not considered a white Christmas

As a result, while some states are already preparing for a postcard-perfect winter landscape, others will welcome Christmas 2025 with lights, carols, and temperatures far removed from the snowy dream.
