With the recent reviews of season 4 of the he hit TV show indicating that it’s as good as it gets, the anticipation surrounding a season 5 is fever pitch, but will there be a season 5 and if so, what can we expect? Join us for a look at all you need to know about the world of the ‘upside down.’

Will there be a ‘Stranger Things’ season 5?

The answer is yes. Before we begin, however, let’s take a moment to appreciate the perfection that was Stranger Things season 4, which was by far the show’s biggest and most intense outing to date. With incredible viewing stats in its opening week of release, season 4 gave us chills, thrills and of course tears - don’t worry no spoilers here - but it also very cleverly set us up for what will undoubtedly be an amazing season 5. To be clear the series’ writers and producers the Duffer brothers have always had an ending and full series plan for Stranger Things, but it has been a closely guarded secret. Having said that, let’s get into what we know.

Is Stranger Things season 5 the final season?

The Duffer brothers confirmed in a letter to fans that the show would indeed come to an end with a fifth and final season. “Seven years ago, we planned out the complete story arc for Stranger Things,” they wrote. “At the time, we predicted the story would last four to five seasons. It proved too large to tell in four, but - as you’ll see for yourselves - we are now hurtling toward our finale.”

What can we expect from Stranger Things season 5?

Though the Duffer brothers confirmed that season 4 volume 2 will answer a multitude of questions about the various mysteries of the world of Stranger Things, there was one glaring absentee which wasn’t addressed and that was the origin of the Upside Down itself. It would appear that their intention is to do exactly that with season 5. “The only thing we don’t fully go into in Volume 2 is Upside Down lore,” they said recently. “We hint at it. I’m sure someone on Reddit will be able to piece it together. But lots of answers about that will be the basis of season 5.” The duo also went on to speak about the significance of the Upside Down freezing on the day of Will Byers disappearance, which was a detail - spoiler alert - that was revealed in season 4 volume 1. “[That is] very significant. We don’t actually resolve that. But that is a huge part of season 5 and we wanted to put that out there and get people talking about it.”

Do we know anything about Stranger Things season 5?

“5 is just going to be pedal to the metal from the opening scene,” Ross Duffer recently said, before revealing that when he and his brother laid out their plans for season 5 to Netflix executives, many were left in an emotional state. “We do have an outline for Season 5 and we pitched it to Netflix and they really responded well to it,” he said. “I mean, it was hard. It’s the end of the story. I saw executives crying who I’ve never seen cry before and it was wild.” Lastly, there is one other detail that the Duffers explained and that’s the notion that we can expect another leap in time. According to the brothers, it simply makes sense to move forward in the 80s to keep pace with a cast that is aging, as such expect season 5 to take us right up to the end of the decade or perhaps even beyond. For the moment, all we can do is get the popcorn out and head back to Hawkins. Fifth

Will there be any Stranger Things spinoff series?

Given the depth of the world which the Duffer brothers have built, it should come as no surprise that there is already chatter about further additions to the Stranger Things universe. There has been no official word on any spinoffs, but given that the series is Netflix’s most recognizable and profitable show, one would have to imagine that the streaming platform won’t pass on the opportunity to expand on the franchise. Of course when all is said and done it will come down to Ross and Matt Duffer, but from the sounds of it, they too have plans for Eleven and the rest of the gang.

In their previously mentioned letter to fans about the show’s ending, they also addressed the possibility of more stories from the world of Stranger Things: “There are still many more exciting stories to tell within the world of Stranger Things; new mysteries, new adventures, new unexpected heroes.” They went on to add, “We do have an idea for a spinoff that we’re super excited about… but we haven’t told anyone the idea yet, much less written it.” Speaking recently the Duffers went further saying, “We think everyone - including Netflix - will be surprised when they hear the concept, because it’s very, very different.” Interestingly, they also explained that they would be working on the spinoff while simultaneously handling season 5. “There is a version of it developing in parallel [to season 5],” said Matt Duffer. “We’re going to start getting into it. You don’t want to do it for the wrong reasons. [But] even if you took the Stranger Things title off it, I would be so, so excited about it. It’s going to be different to what anyone is expecting.”
