Worrying new international crisis as “credible intelligence” suggests imminent attack
A spiralling conflict in the disputed Kashmir region has brought tensions between India and Pakistan back to the surface.

Last week’s terrorist attack in the controversial Kashmir region has caused a spike in tensions between India and Pakistan, potentially setting the two nuclear nations up for a direct confrontation.
India has publicly accused the Pakistani government of providing support for the attack, a claim that Pakistan denies. Diplomatic ties between the two nations have officially been downgraded, sparking concern that the dispute could spiral into a major conflict.
The situation worsened on Wednesday when Pakistan’s Information Minister Attaullah Tarar issued a shocking statement on X, claiming that an attack from India could be imminent.
“Pakistan has credible intelligence that India intends carrying out military action against Pakistan in the next 24-36 hours,” Attaullah wrote. That was posted in the early hours of Wednesday morning, suggesting that the attack is expected by Thursday night. No evidence was given to support the claim.
What happened in the Kashmir terror attack?
On Tuesday, April 22 at least 26 people were killed when a group of gunmen opened fire on tourists in Kashmir. The attack took place in Pahalgam in the Himalayan mountains, a popular destination for Indian visitors.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has promised that the attackers “will be brought to justice” in the aftermath of the “heinous attack.” However Last weekend’s violence was just the latest evidence of the diplomatic difficulties surrounding the territory that once formed a part of the British Empire.
The Indian-controlled region is a disputed territory, now jointly overseen by China, India and Pakistan. For decades there has been a sizeable anti-India sentiment in the region and authorities fear that this latest act of violence could spark a broader conflict between the two nations.
US Vice President JD Vance was in India last week and was visiting Jaipur on Tuesday when the violence erupted in Kashmir. He took the opportunity to condemn the horrific scenes seen last week, saying: “Over the past few days, we have been overcome with the beauty of this country and its people. Our thoughts and prayers are with them as they mourn this horrific attack.”
