Yanis Varoufakis, economist: “It’s always better to sound like a radical than to act like a conformist”
The former Greek finance minister and DiEM25 founder champions bold ideas, transparency, and democracy over compromise in Europe’s politics.

Yanis Varoufakis, the Greek economist and politician, was born on March 24, 1961, in Athens. Known for his sharp critiques of European Union economic policies, he has emerged as a key voice in debates about economic crises and democratic reform across the continent.
Varoufakis earned a Ph.D. in economics from the University of Essex in the United Kingdom and has taught at prestigious institutions including Cambridge University and the University of Texas at Austin. His academic work - spanning books and numerous scholarly articles - has earned him widespread recognition and respect in the economics community.
A defining moment in Greek politics
Varoufakis gained international attention during his brief tenure as Greece’s finance minister in 2015, amid the country’s severe debt crisis. He openly challenged the austerity measures imposed by the Troika, the trio of the European Central Bank, European Commission, and International Monetary Fund, and called for a restructuring of Greece’s debt.
During tense negotiations, his direct and uncompromising style made him a polarizing figure. After a national referendum rejected the creditors’ proposed conditions, Varoufakis resigned, leaving behind a legacy of bold economic confrontation.
From politics to activism
Since leaving office, Varoufakis has focused on activism and critiquing neoliberal policies in Europe. He founded Democracy in Europe 2025 (DiEM25), a movement aimed at democratizing the EU and increasing transparency in its institutions.
Throughout his career, Varoufakis has delivered memorable statements that resonate with citizens, such as, “It is always better to sound like a radical than to act like a conformist,” and “Democracy should always be a project of hope and imagination.” His daring and unapologetic approach has earned him both devoted followers and outspoken critics.
A vision for Europe
Varoufakis’s goal has remained consistent: building a fairer, more democratic Europe. With his bold ideas and fearless voice, he continues to challenge the status quo, inspiring debate and pushing for meaningful change across the continent.
