CD Projekt RED

CDPR explains why Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty is going to be the game’s only expansion

CD Projekt RED, developers behind The Witcher and Cyberpunk 2077, is already working on sequels for both franchises and explain why Phantom Liberty is the only expansion for its game.

Update:
Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty

Phantom Liberty will be the only expansion for Cyberpunk 2077, a decision that CD Projekt RED had already hinted at months ago. However, the developers have just confirmed why there will be no more additional content for the title. During a question and answer session (via VGC), they were asked about the issue, and Michał Nowakowski, from CDPR, justified it alluding to the fact that it is a technological reason that has nothing to do with numbers. In fact, the team is already focused on the sequel.

“The decision has actually been made. As we have announced a long time ago, we’re not going to make a second or third expansion. This is the only expansion of the game, and it has nothing to do with the numbers and how satisfied or not we are with sales or anything of the kind,” said Nowakowski.

Why won’t they use the technology from The Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk 2077 more?

“It’s a technological decision to be honest. This is the last time we’re working on the Red Engine for the time being at least, and in the foreseeable future as you know we are working on the Unreal Engine from Epic. This was one of the key reasons why we decided this was the only one.”

Unless something unexpected happens, CD Projekt RED’s agreement with Epic Games is very long. The Polish company announced that it had signed a 15-year collaboration contract with which both will work together on Unreal Engine projects, both in game development and in the graphics engine itself.

Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty will turn on the neon lights of Night City once again on September 26 on Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, PS5, and PC. CD Projekt RED will also launch update 2.0 for the base game, which will include a redesign of skill trees, as well as a drastic changes to vehicle combat and police chases.
