Destiny 2 Proximity Sensor Alert: what does it do and how to get it?
The latest Destiny 2 Echoes acts have brought with them new missions and unlockable rewards, with some requiring the use of a Proximity Sensor Alert.
Destiny 2 has been on the rise lately thanks to its revived popularity after the release of The Final Shape, its latest expansion that closes up a 10 year long story arc and that has made way for a new style of live-service which says goodbye to seasons and brings in episodic content. And the experiment has proven to be a success, as Echoes: Act 1 and 2 brought new unlockable rewards, missions, and all sorts of content.
However, it’s also been a bit hectic for players use to seeing regular Seasons being so prominent, as the way certain missions work isn’t so easy to understand. Take for example a pair of quests that see you helping Failsafe, the Golden Age AI located at the HELM, study a variety of Specimens from around the galaxy. These are a pair of quests that’ll see you hunting down certain Vex enemies, but to even get them to start you need to have a new item called the “Proximity Sensor Alert”.
What is a Proximity Sensor Alert in Destiny 2, and how do you get it?
Just as its name implies, the Proximity Sensor Alert is a sort of radar that’ll track specific points of interest around the maps, and they are needed to start a couple of quests. The way to get it is quite simple, but it might be difficult to miss if you’re not paying too much attention.
To get a Proximity Sensor Alert, all you need to do is talk to Failsafe in the HELM (It’s the big hologram in the middle of the room). From its dialog, enter the Research Bays menu, and in the first line of available items you’ll find the item on the right end of the list. Just click on it and you’ll have received it, ready to be used without needing to activate it or anything else.
However, this alone doesn’t start any quest, as there are some things you need to find out in Nessus before the quests start.
What quests can be done with the Proximity Sensor Alert?
At the time of writing, this item allows you to start two different quests, one for Echoes: Act 1 and another for Echoes: Act 2. You can find more info about them below.
Specimen ID: NES003
With the Proximity Sensor Alert in your inventory, play Breach Executable and explore around the map. You’re looking for a Vex specimen that can be collected but that spawns randomly in the map, so searching for it isn’t as simple as going straight to a beacon in your map. When you get close to your objective, the Sensor will activate on the left side of your screen, with a bar filling up depending on how close you are to the specimen.
When the bar is full, you only need to look around for it. It’s the top of a Vex head, buried slightly into the ground. Interact with it, and you’ll be able to talk with Failsafe at the HELM again to start this quest. In it, you’ll hunt down goblins, fanatics, hobgoblins, harpies, a hydra, a wyvern, a minotaur and a cyclops, so you’ll get plenty to do. When you complete, you’ll upgrade your rewards for completing Breach Executable from then on.

This time around, there are a few options to getting the quest started. As before, make sure you have the Proximity Sensor Alert on you, and head into any of the three Battlegrounds: Echoes activities in the game. Also as before, you’ll have to search around these maps until the Sensor turns on and guides you to the sample.
Once you find any sample, talk to Failsafe back at the HELM to begin the quest. For this mission you’ll be tasked with defeating combatants with sidearms and auto rifles, solar or arc damage, and generate Orbs of Power, so you’ll be doing some hefty PvP for this one.
The reward, however, is a bit more interesting: you’ll get the Assimilated Torch Hammer, which can be used in any Battleground: Echoes to summon special bosses called Assimilated Demolishers. Defeating the boss and completing the Battleground will net you extra rewards, as well as Assimilated Beacons that let you fight the bosses again on Nessus, in Watcher’s Grave. You’ll have a limited amount of time to defeat them, but you also get the chance to get one of the rare items you need to complete seasonal triumphs this time around.
