Is J.K. Rowling involved in the new Harry Potter TV show?
The Harry Potter TV series is set to come out in a few years, but is the novels’ author involved with its production? This is what we know so far.
The Harry Potter saga is probably one of the biggest cultural pillars of recent generations. Both its books and the movie adaptations that followed, as well as the recent Hogwarts Legacy game that became one of the biggest titles in the industry in 2023, have left their mark on countless fans around the world. So when a TV show adapting the books in a new style was announced, many were delighted. But what about the series’ creator?
With over two decades since the beginning of the Wizarding World (the franchise, not the theme park), fans have enjoyed a wide variety of spin-offs and adaptations of the ridiculously popular books by J.K Rowling. However, in recent years being a Potterhead became sort of a complicated issue after Rowling started openly supporting anti-transgender movements, speaking about the issue with hostility against the topic and immediately facing backlash for it.
Ever since her comments in 2020, fans started to pull back from the franchise, and as a result, many of the people involved stood up in defense of the productions and the stories. Eventually, J.K. Rowling was practically disowned from her own creation, no longer becoming part of many of the projects that were well underway. The author was notably absent from HBO’s 20th-anniversary special in which the cast and crew got together to reminisce about the release of the first film in the series, ‘Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone”.
However, her presence is an unavoidable truth about the franchise, especially when dealing with the original source material that this new series is set to adapt. So the question remains: is she directly involved with the Max TV show?
How involved is J.K. Rowling with the Harry Potter TV show?
Unfortunately, no details have been revealed about the series or the author’s involvement. However, we do know that Warner Bros. has had at least one meeting with her in the process of preparing for the production of the TV show.
“We spent some real time with J.K. and her team,” said Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav to the company’s shareholders during their announcement of a new focus on franchises. “Both sides are just thrilled to be reigniting this franchise. Our conversations were great, and we couldn’t be more excited about what’s ahead. We can’t wait to share a decade of new stories with fans around the world on Max.”
Until more details are revealed, there is simply no telling how involved the author truly is. Rowling has been heavily involved with the production of the franchise’s movies, both with the original stories and as a producer, which could mean that she might return in a similar capacity for the show. However, until Warner Bros. makes an official announcement this is little more than speculation.
