Nintendo Switch 2 pre-orders will have to wait due to new tariffs

US pre-orders delayed due to tariffs, but June launch remains firm.

Getting your hands on a Nintendo Switch 2 seems more complicated than beating the most difficult fan-made levels in Super Mario Maker. April 9th was going to be the day that fans of the brand would be able to pre-order their console. Nintendo, aware of the reseller problem, had already devised a plan to ensure that the units would reach gamers and not scalpers. But along the way, a new obstacle appeared: the tariffs imposed by the Trump administration.

Nintendo postpones US pre-orders

Following the new tariffs imposed on various electronic products, Nintendo has decided to postpone the console’s pre-orders in the United States in order “to assess the potential impact” of these measures. However, the company has confirmed that the release date is still set for June 5, 2025. In a statement sent to GameSpot, Nintendo said the following:

“Pre-orders for Nintendo Switch 2 in the U.S. will not start April 9, 2025, in order to assess the potential impact of tariffs and evolving market conditions. Nintendo will update timing at a later date. The launch date of June 5, 2025, is unchanged.”

Will this affect the price of the console?

The new tariffs could lead to an increase in the price of not only the Switch 2, but also other electronic devices. It will be up to companies to decide whether to absorb the additional costs or pass them on to consumers.

It remains to be seen how these tariffs will affect the price of the console, or if the high price with which it was announced in the middle of this week, $450 for the standard version and $499 including Mario Kart World, will allow it to absorb the blow of the tariffs that have been announced since the beginning of the year. In addition, gamers have already expressed their dissatisfaction with the increase in the price of games, which adds more uncertainty about how these economic changes will affect Nintendo’s strategy in the coming months.
