The Oscars will have a new category next year that will finally recognize film risk

The Academy Awards have always been synonymous with prestige, the highest recognition of excellence in the world of cinema. Actors, directors, screenwriters... all have had their moment of glory at the most important gala of the seventh art. But there was one group that remained in the shadows: the stunt performer. This will change in 2027.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced through its social media the creation of a new category: Achievement in Stunt Design. An award that seeks to recognize the work of those who put their bodies on the line in every action scene, making the impossible possible, and who, until now, have not received the recognition they deserve. And yes, it is inevitable to think of Tom Cruise, an actor who has distinguished himself by his dedication to filming his own stunts.

“Since the early days of cinema, stunt design has been an integral part of filmmaking,” said Academy CEO Bill Kramer and Academy President Janet Yang in a joint statement published in conjunction with this announcement. “We are proud to honor the innovative work of these technical and creative artists, and we congratulate them for their commitment and dedication in reaching this momentous occasion.”

The initiative was spearheaded by David Leitch, director of films such as Deadpool 2 and Bullet Train. His latest film, ’The Fall Guy’ (starring Ryan Gosling), pays tribute to these professionals who make danger their way of life. Though the movie was not a huge box office success, it did succeed in highlighting the tireless work of stuntmen.

More than 100 stunt professionals are members of the Academy’s Production and Technology Branch.
