Angels stay aggressive as they sign Yusei Kikuchi

The Los Angeles Angles have been perhaps the most aggressive team in free agency and have now upped the tempo, signing left-handed pitcher Yusei Kikuchi to a three year deal.

The Los Angeles Angels are making waves this offseason, and their latest move is the signing of left-handed pitcher Yusei Kikuchi to a three-year, $63 million deal. This marks the team’s most significant investment under general manager Perry Minasian, who continues reshaping the roster after a tough 2024 season that saw the Angels lose 99 games.

Kikuchi, 33, brings a dynamic presence to the Angels' rotation. His 2024 campaign showcased his resilience and evolution as a pitcher. After a midseason trade from the Toronto Blue Jays to the Houston Astros, he transformed into a dominant force, posting a 2.70 ERA across 10 starts. A revamped pitch mix, particularly an increased reliance on his slider, was key to his success. He also delivered career-best velocity, with his fastball averaging 95.5 mph during his stint with Houston.

Kikuchi’s arrival fills a critical need for the Angels. He joins a rotation bolstered by the recent signing of Kyle Hendricks and a mix of promising young arms. His experience, coupled with a strikeout-heavy approach, complements the team’s effort to improve both durability and swing-and-miss potential on the mound. Kikuchi will slot in as a potential ace and looks poised to make an immediate impact.

The Angels’ aggressive offseason strategy doesn’t stop at pitching. They’ve also acquired Jorge Soler to add power to their lineup and signed veterans like catcher Travis d’Arnaud. The team is working to rebound and compete in a stacked AL West, particularly as they look to replace the massive void left by Shohei Ohtani’s departure.

Kikuchi’s signing not only strengthens the Angels‘ roster but also keeps their connection with Japanese baseball alive. He follows in Ohtani’s footsteps as a former star of Nippon Professional Baseball and even attended the same high school as the two-way phenom. The move is sure to resonate with the Angels’ sizable Japanese fan base, reinforcing the team’s global appeal.

This deal underscores Minasian’s determination to rebuild a contender. While the Angels aren’t done making moves, the addition of Kikuchi signals their commitment to revamping a team ready to leave 2024’s struggles in the rearview mirror.
