Team USA will be looking to progress to Tuesday’s final after seeing off Venezuela. Cuba, who beat Australia, stand in their way.
Team USA booked their place in the 2023 World Baseball Classic semi-finals after beating Venezuela 9-7 in a breathtaking matchup at LoanDepot Park on Saturday. The defending champions raced to a 3-0 lead in Miami before Luis Arráez hit two two-run homers, the second of which put Venezuela 7-5 heading into the eighth. Jose Quijada’s pitching troubles came back to haunt Venezuela when he loaded up the bases for Trea Turner. Bracho came out of the bullpen to try and put out the fire, but hung a middle-cut change up that Turner crushed for a towering grand slam to put the USA up 9-7.

Pool A winners Cuba meanwhile head into Sunday’s semi-final with a few days’ more rest. They defeated Australia 3-4 in Tokyo on Wednesday. Currently 8th in WBSC’s world rankings, Armando Johnson’s side arrived in Florida on Thursday morning, setting up their base camp in Jupiter. Cuba are aiming to reach their first WBC final since 2006, when it lost 10-6 to Japan in San Diego.

Japan and Mexico will play in the other semi-final on Monday, also at LoanDepot Park, with the final set for Tuesday at the same venue.
