Did a Philadelphia pizzeria really refuse to serve the Houston Astros?
While some have claimed that malnourishment lead to their Game 3 defeat, we’re not sure a pizza would have made a difference in the face of a Phillies onsalught.
As if getting hammered by the Phillies wasn’t bad enough, it seems the Astros couldn’t even get service at some of Philadelphia’s restaurants when they went in search of foood.
No Service: Astros can’t find food in Philadelphia
While the Astros clearly have other problems on their hands with the 2022 World Series now 2-1 in the Phillies favor, it really doesn’t help that they can’t seem to get a meal. At least, that’s what recent reports are indicating. Indeed, as per reports, one local restaurant is thought to have refused catering service to the Astros and in fact, has since received a large amount of social media backlash for doing so. Angelo’s Pizzeria is understood to have allegedly turned down the Astros when contacted about possible catering. From there, it didn’t take long before the notion became viral, which in turn resulted in Angelo’s vehemently denying the accusation in an Instagram story.
Owner Danny DiGiampietro was quick to respond to claims that his restaurant wasn’t being sportsmanlike, explaining that it was simply a matter of too big an order, for too little time. “We have no problem cooking for anybody,” DiGiampietro said. “The problem was where it was just so late. I have to be here at 3, 4 in the morning to bake all the bread. There was just no way, so it didn’t work out. ...People are telling me there are stories that we left the Astros malnourished and all that, and that was not the case at all. There was no nefarious intention behind it and there was no ill will.”
How did social media respond to Angelo’s alleged refusal of the Astros?
If you’ve got even casual involvement on social media, you surely don’t have to guess as to how things went, once Houston fans learned of their team apparently not receiving service. To hear DiGiampietro tell it, “All hell broke loose.” Believe it or not, some Astros fans actually managed to uncover DiGiampietro’s home address and license plate then proceeded to share them online. Another individual on Twitter who claimed to be an Angelo’s employed alluded to the idea that some fans had even called the restaurant with bomb threats. Since the initial barrage, it’s been largely heckling that the establishment has had to deal with according to DiGiampietro.
“There are TikTok challenges to throw cheesesteaks in my face, you get $250...The girls [working at Angelos] were saying that people with southern accents were calling the phones, telling us to ‘eat s-t’ and ordering pizzas,” DiGiampietro said. “It turned into this whole thing, then it got picked up by news outlets.”
Lack of pizza is the least of the Astros problems
As we mentioned before, the Astros are trailing 2-1 in the series, but worse still is the manner in which they just lost Game 3. Quite frankly, Houston was mauled in what turned out to be a 7-0 win for the Phillies. With that, the Astros more or less need to win on Wednesday night. Failure to do so will mean they will go 3-1 down with Game 5 set to be played in Philadelphia on Thursday. Not a good place to be.
