The problems on the mound keep piling up for the Houston Astros, who announced that starting pitcherJ.P. France underwent surgery on July 1 to repair a tear in the capsule of his right shoulder, taking him out of the mix for the remainder of the 2024 Major League Baseball season.

France last pitched in the MLB on April 23 against the Chicago Cubs. However, discomfort in his throwing shoulder was a constant throughout Spring Training. The right-handed pitcher made five starts for the Astros with a 0-3 record and a 7.46 ERA after allowing 21 runs in 25.1 innings.

After his five starts in the majors, France was optioned to Triple-A and made one start before being placed on the disabled list. During his lone performance with the SugarLand Space Cowboys, he gave up three runs in three and two-thirds innings.

The Astros have suffered with injuries to their starters

Due to multiple injuries among their pitcher staff, the Astros have used 10 different starters so far during the current season. The only pitchers who have remained relatively healthy are Ronel Blanco, Hunter Brown, Spencer Arrighetti and Framber Valdez, who currently make up the rotation.

In addition to France, Houston has Cristian Javier, Justin Verlander and Jake Bloss on the injured list, with José Urquidy out of action due to Tommy John surgery.
