Houston Astros vs Philadelphia Phillies Game 3 of the World Series: reactions and takeaways
The Philadelphia Phillies pulled off a 7-0 win in Game 3 over the Houston Astros with home runs at their home arena, to pull ahead in the World Series 2-1.
After 5-0 starts by the Houston Astros in Games 1 and 2, it was the Philadelphia Phillies’ turn to blaze at the beginning with a 4-0 lead after two innings in Game 3. The match ended up with the Astros shut out, 7-0.
Here are some key points in the game.
A terrible night for McCullers
Houston starting pitcher Lance McCullers had a monumentally dreadful game, with the Phillies’ hitters seemingly able to pick up on exactly what pitch he was going to throw next. He allowed five home runs, making him tied for the most homers surrendered by a pitcher in a World Series match. It’s not all on him though; he should have been pulled out in the fifth inning before Philadelphia pulled irrevocably away.
Home runs all around
The Phillies took advantage of McCullers’ shaky performance and became the first team to knock out five homers in the first five innings of a World Series matchup, and also the first to hit three home runs in the first two frames. The dingers were delivered by Bryce Harper, Brandon Marsh, Kyle Schwarber, Rhys Hoskins, and Alec Bohm.
Bohm’s historical hit
Speaking of Alec Bohm… the third baseman made history books when he hit the 1,000th home run in the World Series. It took 119 years to rack up that number, as the first home run in World Series history was hit in 1903. Before Bohm’s at-bat, Harper called him over and whispered something to him, immediately after he which he struck the milestone homer.

Don’t forget Suárez
In the face of Philadelphia’s impressive number of home runs, the performance of Ranger Suárez should also be celebrated. The 27-year-old was composed throughout the evening, throwing five shutout innings, with seven groundouts, four strikeouts, four singles, and only a single walk surrendered.
