‘The Mets are a great team. They have shown the ability to always fight, which was one of the reasons I chose them,’ claimed Soto.

Juan Soto pulled on the NY Mets uniform for the first time on Thursday and spoke to the media outlining his reasons from moving to the Mets from city rivals, NY Yankees.

The Dominican explained his reasoning for the move to the other NYC team and stated that the motives were beyond the 15-year, $765 million contract.

“What they (Mets) have done the last couple of years, they have shown all of the ability to keep winning, to keep growing a team to try to grow a dynasty,” Soto said Thursday. “What you were seeing from the other side was unbelievable. The vibes and everything, the feel and future this team has had a lot to do with my decision.”

Free agent Soto was in high demand during the off season with a series of offers on the table with the likes of Toronto Blue Jays and Boston Red Sox also meeting with the 26-year-old.

New York Mets are Soto’s his fourth team since breaking into MLB with the Washington Nationals in 2018. He then moved to the San Diego Padres before spending one season with the crosstown rivals Yankees.

Mets bet on Soto

The New York Post reported that the Yankees were willing to fork out $760 million over 16 years to bring back Soto, but the Mets ended up outbidding them.

Soto helped the Yankees reach the World Series in 2024 after hitting a career-high 41 home runs and was on the losing side as the New Yorkers fell in a five-game World Series set that the Los Angeles Dodgers won 4-1.

In 936 career games across seven major league seasons with the Nationals (2018-22), San Diego Padres (2022-23) and Yankees (2024), Soto has struck 201 home runs.
