What to know about the 2022 MLB playoffs?

In case you haven’t been following, this year will see an expansion for the first time. Instead of 10 teams, we’ve now got 12 and they will of course be kicking of the postseason on Friday, October 7th. With the Atlanta Braves being the last through the door, after clinching the NL East on Tuesday night, the field is now set. Indeed, we’ve also seen the allocation of the wild-card seeding and with that the Wild Card Series were announced on Wednesday.

It’s also important to note, that the 2022 MLB postseason will be going all the way into November, after the owner-imposed lockout resulted in a significant delay to the start of the season. To be clear, Game 4 of the World Series is scheduled for Tuesday, November 1st, which is to say that’s the earliest day on which the championship could be decided. Should we go to 7 games, that will take us all the way to Saturday, November 5th. In case you’re wondering, that would be the latest that a World Series game has ever been played in MLB history. Aside from that, here are a few tidbits that you should know:

  • The best-of-three Wild Card Series will be played on three consecutive days. There are no off-days during the series
  • There are no off days between Games 4 and 5 of the LDS, or between Games 5 and 6 of the LCS.
  • The World Series follows the usual 2-3-2 format with off-days between Games 2 and 3, and Games 5 and 6.
