The first time the Commissioner’s Trophy was awarded to the Major League Baseball champion was in the 1967 season when the St. Louis Cardinals defeated the Boston Red Sox in a seven-game World Series. One of the significant differences compared to the trophies awarded in other American sports leagues is that a new Commissioner’s Trophy is crafted each year for the World Series champion.
It is made of silver and weighs approximately 13.60 kg / 30 lbs, standing at a height of 60 cm / 24 inch with a diameter of 27.9 cm / 11 inch. One distinctive feature is the presence of 30 golden flags representing the member franchises of Major League Baseball. The intricate detail of these 30 flags is displayed on a silver baseball, symbolizing the world, and bearing the signature of the commissioner.
Who makes the MLB Commissioner’s Trophy?
The prestigious jewelry company Tiffany & Co has been responsible for making the Trophy since 1999. Additionally, since 2017, the award ceremony has taken place at the center of the baseball diamond, regardless of whether the winning team is the home or visiting team, whereas previously, it was only held if the champion was the home team.
The New York Yankees hold the record for the most Commissioner’s Trophies in their display cases, as out of their 27 championships, seven have been secured since the inception of this award.
