The pitcher who joined Koufax and Kershaw in rare Cy Young history

Tarik Skubal of the Detroit Tigers has been named the American League Cy Young Award winner, earning the honor for the second consecutive year. The 28-year-old outpaced Boston’s Garrett Crochet and Houston’s Hunter Brown to secure the top pitching prize.

Skubal received 26 first-place votes and four second-place votes, finishing with 198 points. Crochet earned 132 points (four first-place votes and 26 seconds), while Brown finished third with 80. Max Fried of the New York Yankees and Bryan Woo of the Seattle Mariners rounded out the top five. Carlos Rodón, Aroldis Chapman, Jacob deGrom, Trevor Rogers and Drew Rasmussen also picked up votes.

By doing so, Skubal joined an elite group of left-handers – Sandy Koufax (1965–66), Randy Johnson (1999–2002) and Clayton Kershaw (2013–14) – to win the Cy Young in consecutive seasons. He also became the seventh Tigers pitcher to take home the award, giving Detroit the third-most winners of any franchise since the Cy Young’s inception in 1956.

Skubal’s 2025 campaign was nothing short of dominant. He posted a 13–6 record, struck out 241 batters, threw one shutout and led the American League with a 2.21 ERA. He also paced all of MLB with a 0.89 WHIP,1.5 walks per nine innings and a 7.30 strikeout-to-walk ratio, underscoring his remarkable command and consistency.
