The only thing that is certain in the lineup for team USA is that it is stacked. Up and down and in depth. When the defending champions get their WBC campaign under way against Great Britain on Saturday in Arizona, they will have the one thing that every team dreams of: options.

On the mound, Adam Wainwright has been tapped for the start. The St Louis Cardinals veteran right-hander will be expected to keep the Lions to a run or less in his outing, strictly limited by the WBC’s pitch count.

Producing runs to back him up, team USA fields a fearsome roster. There are several iterations that the USA has used in their training games, with Mookie Betts leading off or Tim Anderson leading off, versus a speedy Trea Turner in the seventh spot or a powerful Pete Alonso in the order.

Given that the second game is against Mexico, the USA may want to save their power for that matchup, and could go with the first option. But who knows, it could all change depending on how the players are feeling and what manager Mark DeRosa sees on the day.

So take this with a pinch of salt. But here goes anyway.

Possible USA Lineup 1

  1. Mookie Betts, RF
  2. Mike Trout, CF
  3. Kyle Schwarber, DH
  4. Paul Goldschmidt, 1B
  5. Nolan Arenado, 3B
  6. Kyle Tucker, LF
  7. Trea Turner, SS
  8. J.T. Realmuto, C
  9. Jeff McNeil, 2B

Possible USA Lineup 2

  1. Tim Anderson, SS
  2. Mookie Betts, RF
  3. Mike Trout, CF
  4. Paul Goldschmidt, 1B
  5. Pete Alonso, DH
  6. Nolan Arenado, 3B
  7. Kyle Tucker, LF
  8. J.T. Realmuto, C
  9. Jeff McNeil, 2B

Of course, there are several variants on this, but you get the picture. Team USA is stacked and loaded for bear.
